Earning a college degree has historically meant conforming to rigid course guidelines and restrictions on college credit transfers. Eastern Michigan University's online Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) degree program is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing students to graduate sooner and with a degree meant to match personalized needs.
If you have earned previous college credits and are looking for a convenient program to complete your degree, the online BGS program may be an ideal choice. All our online courses are taught by EMU faculty — the same faculty who teach on campus. And a BGS degree holds the same distinction as a B.S. or a B.A. If you have questions about EMU's online BGS degree, this overview will guide you through the basics.
3 Areas of Focus
Rather than requiring extensive studies in one subject, EMU's multidisciplinary approach allows students to spread their focus to three areas of study. Students must complete 124 total credit hours, including 30 credits hours taken at EMU.
Students also need to complete 20 credit hours in each area of emphasis. An area of emphasis may include courses from one or several departments as long as the courses are consistent with the area's focus. EMU will provide students with an advisor to create an Individualized Studies Program.
EMU offers courses in management, criminology, dietetics and other popular and in-demand fields of study. View the full list of our Bachelor of General Studies online courses.
Transfer Credit Policy
EMU's 124-credit-hour degree requires that 30 hours are completed through our online program. The remaining credit hours can be transferred from another school if they qualify. If you have questions about the eligibility of your transfer credits, please contact our admissions office. Students with anywhere from 12 to 94 existing credit hours may benefit from this feature.
Applicants to the online BGS must have 12 or more transferable credits from a previously attended college or university and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Study on Your Time
In addition to a generous college credit transfer policy and the option to choose three areas of study, EMU's BGS degree offers all the benefits of an online program. You can interact with fellow students and professors through a special online portal. Online courses allow you to study day or night throughout the week or on the weekend — it's up to you. This feature may be ideal for working students and parents.
Online degrees offer the following benefits:
- Flexible learning environment: Online courses mean no traffic or worries about being late to class. Simply log on to take tests and quizzes, and study when it is convenient for you.
- Lower costs: Online courses are often more affordable than classes at brick-and-mortar institutions. EMU's BGS degree tuition is only $395 per credit hour.
- Career advancement opportunities: A degree earned online offers the same benefits as a traditional college degree. College graduates have career advancement opportunities that non-degree holders often do not.
