  • What do students learn in your classes? What is the expected outcome?

Students in my classes learn hands-on about current forensics, response, and policy trends seen in various industries.

  • What advice would you give to those considering this online degree program?

Students who extend their learning beyond the classroom tend to have the best success. Working on side projects, learning a new operating system, network, or security software should start now, as you have to continually learn once you graduate and find work in the field.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in cyber security?

Soft skills such as writing, presenting and other social skills are vital to being successful in the field. Also, students need to understand that information security is a lifelong learning commitment. New threats, and counters to those threats, are constantly evolving, and it takes personal time and effort to keep up with these trends.

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in the profession face today?

Individuals within information security need to have time management skills. Since the demand far outweighs supply of resources, you will constantly be bombarded with many tasks. Learning time management and work-life balance is critical to surviving within the field.

  • Tell us something that your students might find interesting, something they may not know about you.

I'm a huge Tigers baseball fan.
