What do students learn in your classes? What is the expected outcome?

In Essentials of Professional Nursing Practice III, students will learn to:

• Synthesize knowledge from nursing, liberal arts and sciences into the practice of professional nursing
• Examine culturally competent, patient-centered, compassionate, evidence-based care to achieve safe, high-quality outcomes
• Demonstrate critical thinking and clinical reasoning as integral to professional nursing
• Analyze the impact of health care financial and regulatory policies on regional, national and global health of individuals, families, groups, communities and populations
• Integrate information management, emerging technologies, research findings, teaching/learning principles and effective leadership skills to achieve safe health care environments and quality outcomes
• Analyze the effects of intra- and inter-professional communication and collaboration to provide safe, patient-centered care
• Display a commitment to the professional nursing values of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice
• Prepare for post-graduation professional development

In Essentials of Emergency Nursing Care, students will learn to:

• Explain how various patient presentations in the Emergency Department will affect the delivery of nursing care
• Identify (based on reading, virtual case studies, and/or personal experiences) those nursing interventions that are most likely to achieve effective, safe and high-quality nursing care when discussing patients who commonly present to the Emergency Department
• Summarize and evaluate the main ideas, arguments, positions and findings of current literature regarding nursing care in the Emergency Department
• Critique current literature regarding nursing care in the Emergency Department in terms of contributions to the field and overall effectiveness
• Identify electrocardiograms that are indicative of myocardial injury

Why did you start teaching?

I started teaching for many reasons. I found out that I had a passion for teaching when I was precepting new graduate nurses in the Emergency Department. I feel that I am very patient, which my students appreciate. My mother, aunt, uncle and grandpa were all teachers, so it is no surprise to me that I am also a teacher. A nurse wears many hats, and one of them is that of a teacher, even if that nurse does not have the formal job title of "teacher." It is very rewarding to me to see the progress that students make in my courses, and it is even better when I get to see them walk across the stage at graduation.

What advice would you give to those considering this online degree program?

I would say to expect the unexpected. Be flexible and patient. Be ready to be challenged. Expect that you are going to put in many hours. Know that you will get out of this online degree program what you put into it. Connect with your professors.

What do you think is the biggest challenge that nurses face today?

Workplace violence, inadequate staffing.

What is the one book you think everyone should read?

I prefer journal articles and case studies.

I love to play basketball and golf. I rarely watch TV/movies. I love music!
