Dr. Martha Baiyee, Professor

    • ECE 616: Curriculum and Environments
    • ECE 641: Assessment Practices
    • ECE 689: Colloquium and Internship
  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in the profession in which you teach?

Early childhood educators must have sound knowledge, skills and competencies in working with children and their families in a diverse and democratic society. In addition, they must have an open disposition—being eclectic with repertoire of theories and practices and having good judgment to decide on which one to tap into so that each child's development and learning will be maximized.

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in the profession face today?

    • Increased diversity of children and their families, yet under-representation of diversity in educators in the school and center-based programs/settings
    • Feminized culture of ECE profession, yet crucial to have male educators
    • Low compensation for valuable work
    • Charge to balance best practices and national state and local mandates
  • Why did you start teaching?

I find joy in learning and thought teaching must be the same. The inherent paradox of teaching and learning excites me. I like the feeling of enlightenment that comes from co-construction of meaning with learners. I fundamentally believe that teaching is learning and vice versa.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

"Pedagogy of the Oppressed" By Paulo Freire
