A Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) degree gives students the freedom to design a degree plan that works for them. A BGS holds the same distinction and value as other undergraduate degrees, such as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS).
Students who enter Eastern Michigan University's online BGS program choose three areas of emphasis. The online degree program is taught by EMU faculty and allows students to explore multiple areas of interest while building upon previous college credits. If you are considering a BGS degree, this overview should help answer questions you may have.
Is a BGS Degree Right for Me?
An article in U.S. News & World Report noted that a BGS degree can benefit career-minded students because of the "well-rounded" knowledge base a BGS degree affords. The article goes on to list common careers that graduates with a BGS degree can successfully apply to, including industrial management, legal services, aviation or insurance.
Any student who is seeking a personalized, multidisciplinary degree can benefit from our online BGS program. Ideal candidates often have:
Previous college credits: Students sometimes accumulate significant college credits but become unable to complete a college degree for various reasons. EMU's BGS program allows students to build on their credit hours while working toward the 124 total credit hours needed for the Bachelor of General Studies degree plan. To complete our online program, students must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours through EMU. At least 15 of these must be at the 300/400 level.
Uncertainty about which career to pursue: Selecting a narrowly focused degree can be difficult for college students unsure of a career path to pursue. By broadening the focus to three areas, students in our BGS program are no longer tied to a specific career choice. The results give students the freedom to pursue a wide range of jobs after college.
Day jobs or other obligations: Students in their early 20s or older may be working, raising a family or both. The online courses offered through our BGS program give these working adults the flexibility to study after work or on weekends.
Plans to apply for graduate school: Some jobs require a graduate degree. To pave the way for on-time graduation and graduate school, students can opt for the simplicity of a BGS degree.
What Courses Are Offered Through a BGS degree?
EMU's online BGS program offers a flexible curriculum. The online degree requires students to focus on three distinct and clearly defined areas with at least 20 credit hours per area.
A few of the areas of focus offered at EMU include:
- General education
- Earth science
- Political science
- Technology management
