Graduates have access to a large network of educators and administrators across the U.S. The Department of Special Education, and Communication Sciences and Disorders at EMU is one of the largest and most comprehensive special education, and communication sciences and disorders units in the U.S. Courses are taught by professors with significant, practical experience in special education. Field experience is embedded in the coursework.

Special education is a high-demand position in most of the U.S. EMU has almost 100% placement for SPED graduates.

In addition to successful completion of all coursework, including the practicum, students will need to pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in their endorsement area in order to have the endorsement added to their teaching certificate.

All professional education programs in the Eastern Michigan University College of Education are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and approved by the Michigan Department of Education.

*The maximum grant amount can vary by year. TEACH Grants are available to qualified applicants and require approved recipients to sign a service agreement for certain teaching service obligations for four academic years. If obligations are not met within eight years after graduation, the grant will turn into a Direct Unsubsidized Loan that must be repaid with all accrued interest from the date of disbursement.
