What Is a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership?

The online M.A. in Educational Leadership program from Eastern Michigan University (EMU) equips graduates to develop and support intellectually rigorous and coherent systems of curriculum, instruction and assessment. This NCATE/CAEP-accredited program focuses on helping educational leaders develop, advocate, and enact a shared mission, vision and core values of high-quality education and academic success.

In addition to learning how to manage school operations and resources, you can gain the knowledge you need to engage families and the community in meaningful, reciprocal and mutually beneficial ways. You will learn ways to strive for equity of educational opportunity and culturally responsive practices. As an educational leader, you’ll have the tools to help develop the professional capacity and practice of school personnel and foster your community of teachers and other professional staff.

Course of Study

The M.A. in Educational Leadership program requires students to complete 32 credit hours in a variety of subject areas, plus three additional hours in consultation with the graduate advisor. Each course is 7.5 weeks long and provides 3 credit hours except for the Master’s Internship which is 15 weeks long and provides 2 credit hours. Students can complete the entire program in as few as 18 months.

Requirements for admission to the College of Education’s M.A. in Educational Leadership online program include: a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with an undergraduate GPA of 2.7, or a 3.0 GPA in major, two letters of recommendation from supervisors/advisors in the field, a resume and a personal essay describing the reasons for requesting admission.
